Features of anti-corrosion primer

When choosing a corrosion-resistant coating, the client often faces a choice - primer or primer-enamel? If the primer is enamel, which one should you prefer? What is the difference between ground enamels? Below we will try to answer these questions.

So, the primer-enamel is a paint and varnish material that combines the properties of a primer (protective function) and a finishing coat (decorative function) of coatings. They are necessary in order to protect the surface from the influence of external factors (atmospheric, UV, chemical, etc.) and give it an aesthetic appearance. Thus, the use of primer-enamels can reduce labor costs, and thereby increase the production capacity for the production of products in comparison with the use of a coating system - primer + enamel. The question with what kind of primer-enamel is somewhat more complicated. The choice of coverage depends on a number of different criteria, which we will consider later.

Types of primer enamels

According to the type of the main film-forming substance, primer-enamels are divided:

  • alkyd, alkyd-urethane,
  • acrylic
  • vinyl chloride
  • epoxy
  • polyurethane.

In the segment "Building metal structures" the most widely used are alkyd, alkyd-urethane enamels.

  • ease of application
  • quick drying time
  • high anticorrosion properties
  • relatively low cost of materials

Epoxy primer-enamels are high-tech, thick-layer materials that can be used both as an independent coating and as a primer in a system with a finish coating. As a rule, they have high anticorrosive properties, but it should be borne in mind that when operating in an open industrial atmosphere, the coating is not resistant to UV radiation, and it is necessary to cover the finish with polyurethane enamel.

Selection tips

The main points that should be considered when choosing a primer-enamel:

  • Operating conditions,
  • the presence of aggressive environmental factors,
  • required coating life
  • substrate material
  • coating drying time
  • staining conditions

Thus, when choosing a coating should be based not only on its own properties, but also on the working conditions and operation of the object.

Composition and specifications

The anticorrosion primer is mainly used for metal, so that it does not become covered with rust, and besides, there are no signs of corrosion. Before considering options for coating metal parts with a primer, you should consider the main components of such a material:

  1. The composition of this substance contains a certain amount of solvent (usually a small dose).
  2. There is also a usual varnish, as well as a special composition for hardening the applied substance.
  3. Separately, it is necessary to highlight the presence of a special pigment, which gives a traditional gray shade.
  4. Additionally, the composition contains substances that significantly improve the adhesion properties.

Often this option (Body 992 primer or other compositions) is used for large surfaces and when priming a car. Such material is characterized by moderate consumption per square meter. Hardening is quick enough. The material is characterized by improved adhesion. In addition, the soil option is perfect for working in various temperature conditions.

Important. After complete drying, a film with a thickness of up to 60 μm is formed, which minimizes the amount of coating applied to the part.

Consumption per 1m2

When applying a corrosion-resistant coating, a different consumption of the device is observed depending on the tool used for the work and the technology used. Consider the main flow parameters:

  • when applied with a brush, an increased consumption is observed, which reaches 300-400 grams per square meter,
  • the use of a roller for work allows you to reduce this value to 200-250 grams per square meter,
  • for well-ventilated rooms, you can use a spray, which will reduce consumption to 150-200 grams per square meter,
  • usually, when applying a layer of the composition in 40 microns, you will need to use 200-250 grams of the composition.

Depending on the thickness required, a specific application technique may be applied.

Corrosion protection mechanism

In this case, we are talking about options for using the composition, and the effect against the possible manifestation of rust on a metal surface. Consider the use cases in more detail:

  1. for an independent protective layer against corrosion or rust on metal products,
  2. special surface treatment in places where welding or other adhesion options are present,
  3. priming with a zinc base for subsequent application of a certain paintwork on top.

In this case, the protection consists in the fact that the substance deposited on the surface forms a structure-dense film that does not allow air or moisture to pass through, and also counteracts other harmful factors.

Important. When using the composition, the following protection mechanisms can be distinguished: independent, additional and complex when using equal proportions of dye and soil.

Advantages and disadvantages

This substance has a number of advantages and some disadvantages. Consider in more detail the main qualities of the primer:

  • relatively low consumption
  • good adhesion
  • necessary corrosion protection properties,
  • quick drying of the composition,
  • slight odor.

Despite a number of positive qualities, there are also some disadvantages. The composition is used only for metals. It is first necessary to carefully prepare the surface. Use a small container under the cover. It will take a long time to ventilate the room. Protective equipment required.

Application features

In the practical application of this component, it is mandatory to encounter some features, namely:

  1. previously the surface must be properly prepared and subsequently degreased,
  2. before direct use it is necessary to mix the primer thoroughly to a homogeneous mass,
  3. if necessary, add solvent to reduce the viscosity of the composition and its solidification time,
  4. the substance can be applied in any convenient way, however, the thickness of the layer depends on the application.

In addition, it should be noted that the substance is applied in the presence of an appropriate respirator and protective equipment. Especially should be monitored for the presence of protection when working with a spray gun.

Important. To achieve maximum effect, the metal is degreased with a special composition before application (solvent or high-octane gasoline).

The main types of soil for metal surfaces

To date, various types of soil for metal products are found in free sale. Consider in more detail the most popular and popular types of composition:

  • zinc based substances
  • primer with acrylic base,
  • epoxy primers for surfaces,
  • alkyd primers.

You can also highlight other options for the primer, but they are used absolutely for other coating materials, in addition, they differ significantly in composition and order of use.

Important. In each individual case, a specific application procedure and conditions for the use of an anti-corrosion primer are provided.

Features of acrylic primer for metal surfaces

Such a device stands out against the general background of the varieties of priming used. This type has a fairly high cost. The longest service life, as well as relatively quick drying and improved adhesion. All this is available due to the fact that acrylic acts as an auxiliary component, which interacts wonderfully with a metal surface.

Surface treatment and coating

In order to qualitatively prepare a part or other structural element for the upcoming painting, the following should be done:

  1. Preliminary, corrosion is removed from the metal.
  2. Subsequently, it is polished.
  3. Further degreasing is carried out.
  4. The next step is to apply a layer of soil to the surface.
  5. After complete drying, the next coat should be applied.

The first coatings are recommended to be applied with a brush or roller, and the last layers are best sprayed from a spray gun.

Important. Since the composition lies in a dense and thick film, two or three coatings may be enough to completely process the part.

Overview of popular manufacturers

To date, various companies produce similar products. The following brands can be distinguished from the general component market:

  • Primer brand VGT.
  • Quality Tikkurila products.
  • Good manufacturer Ceresit.
  • Quality materials KUDO.
  • Domestic coatings BRIGHT and Prestige.

When choosing the most suitable element, it is recommended to rely not only on the characteristics and price tag, but also take into account customer reviews and expert recommendations.

Features

Acrylic primer-enamels are designed to paint a metal surface, including:

  • vehicles
  • infrastructure facilities
  • Agreecultural machines. Agreecultural equipment,
  • other objects and objects for which solid decorative characteristics and a long service life are important.

Decent physicochemical parameters, excellent aesthetic qualities, combined with a solid covering ability and ease of application make these formulations one of the best.

Having dried, the soil-enamel turns into a coating that is strong and resistant to the negative effects of atmospheric processes. It retains shine for a very long time, does not succumb to impacts and various deformations.

Even with short contact with water or industrial oils, anti-corrosion enamel fully justifies its name - the liquid will not be able to get to the metal.

There are many types of such enamels on the market that differ in color.

Preparation for work

The ease of application does not mean that you can completely ignore the preparatory phase. On the surface of the metal should not be any spots, water-soluble deposits, traces of fat and oil. To get rid of these contaminants, use aromatic solvents (solvent, acetone and so on), which are soaked in rags. It is important to check the substrate so that it is clean and dry. The cleaning can be carried out manually, with a mechanical tool, by bead-blasting or sandblasting methods.

The original coating is often quite strong. and has no corrosion defects (with the destruction of not more than 20% of the surface). Then you need to process only deformed areas. Otherwise, it is necessary to clear the substrate and completely prepare a metal object.

The anticorrosive runt enamel must be well mixed, and in some cases the solution must be diluted to the required viscosity.

Its meaning is as follows:

  • when painting with brushes and rollers (60 seconds by viscometer),
  • with aerosol spraying - from 25 to 30 seconds,
  • when spraying in vacuum - from 40 to 60 seconds.

Important: the diluted enamel must be mixed once again and filtered through a steel sieve or mesh.

How to paint?

Soil enamels are applied in one or two layers, when the room temperature is not less than +5 and not more than + 35 degrees, and air humidity does not reach 80%. Each layer is made 30-40 microns thick. When two layers are laid, the coating must be applied at intervals of 15 minutes. At the same time, each layer consumes from 0.1 kg per 1 sq. M. This means that theoretically ordinary containers with a capacity of 25 kg should theoretically be enough for 250 m2.

The station wagon group includes AK-100 type acrylic primer-enamelhelping electrochemical protection of metals. Due to this, the surface is reliably protected from the effects of destructive atmospheric processes, from contact with fresh and salt water. This type of primer enamel contains zinc silver. If the paintwork is deformed, a galvanic combination of metals appears, which can reduce the corrosion rate by 10-40 times (compared with the corrosion rate of pure steel).

Two layers are almost always enough to protect the substrate for a decade and a half, and corrosion does not develop under the film.

An advantage of the AK-100 is also the lack of need for auxiliary equipment, as well as saving labor costs. Top you can apply any kind of enamel.

Main cast

Obviously, the main component of this composition is acrylic. In addition to it, the composition of such enamels includes colored pigment, solvent (water), as well as additives for greater storage of the emulsion, such as antiseptics, various water-repellent and fire-fighting fragrances.

The composition may vary depending on which material it will be used with. For example, in emulsions intended for wood, antifungal additives are added, and in varnishes for metal - water-repellent. The last composition is anti-corrosion primer-enamel.

How to apply

The preparatory phase is very important. Before applying, as we already wrote, it is necessary to clean the surface of all stains, other coatings and degrease it with the help of special compounds. Acetone is the most commonly usedbut in stores you can find other degreasing agents.

The application of enamel should occur in a room where the temperature will not be lower than +5 and not higher than +35 degrees. It should not be too humid (no more than 80% humidity).

There are times when the whole process is carried out outdoors, but it is best to do this indoors to avoid debris sticking to the surface.

The emulsion can be applied in several ways: by brush, roller, spray or vacuum. But no matter which application method you choose, the consumption of an emulsion weighing 25 kg will be 250 square meters.

A two-layer coating with enamel primer will provide surface protection for a period of almost 20 years.

Reviews

Acrylic primer-enamels of the “universal” group, which provide electrochemical protection of metals, are popular among consumers. They include zinc and silver, which slow down the corrosion process almost twice with the constant contact of the metal with salt and fresh water.

Another popular product on the domestic market is quick-drying paint for metal "Tex Universal". It is purchased in order to process iron grates, fences, paint the garage. Consumers note that the surface is resistant to various kinds of oils and is not covered by rust.

It happens that consumers prefer just polyurethane varnish to all paint coatings, which has all the same properties and characteristics. Unlike primer-enamel, it is used for such internal work as coating the floor surface.

Application of primer-enamel will provide a pleasant aesthetic appearance and protect the surface for many years. And this despite the simplicity of application and low cost of consumption for the material.
